It's the beginning of a Texas-BYU Big-12 rivalry. And the end.
While this conference matchup will be short, it won't be sweet. Both teams are looking for their second win in a row after mid-season losses. The Cougars are likely out of title-game contention, but the Longhorns aren't. They're one of four teams with one conference loss, so it's still anyone's race.
While they beat Houston last week, managing a seven-point win, Texas suffered another loss. Quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game in the second half with an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder. This same injury kept him out during last season. There is no timetable for his return, but Steve Sarkisian says he is considered week-to-week. Ewers is expected to return by the end of the season, but until then, Maalik Murphy apparently will be the go-to guy, with Arch Manning potentially getting some snaps as well.
Against Texas Tech, BYU's Kedon Slovis threw for a season-low 127 yards along with two touchdowns. The Cougar defense did what it does best, forcing five turnovers and scoring a touchdown of its own with a fumble return.
Still, BYU has a lot of work to do if it wants a chance at taking down the home team.
